Mangeshi temple in Goa, which is devoted to Lord Mangeshi (one form of Lord Shiva)
, is located at a distance of about 21 kms from Panaji, at Priol in the Atrunja Taluka, presently known as Ponda. Constructed in the 18th century, the Mangeshi temple in Goa, one of the most famous Hindu Temples of Goa is also a very important local attraction in Goa.
The temple was originally situated at Kushasthali, which is at present called Cortalim, the deity was being moved to Priol in the period of Inquisition during which several Hindu temples were demolished in Goa. The deity was moved in 1560 at Priol, the adjacent area of Mangeshi temple in Goa was given to Ramachandra Sukhtankar, a chief in the Court of the Peshawas, by the temple authority, after they received it from the Raja of Soundem. After the removal, the Mangeshi temple in Goa has been reconstructed and renovated for two times during the Maratha rule and for once in 1890. A golden kalash was placed on top of the tall dome of the Mangeshi temple in Goa, after it was renovated for the last time in 1973.
Lord Manguesh, an incarnation of Lord Shiva, has a legend attached to His name. According to the legends, Lord Shiva made up his mind to go on self- enforced exile after he lost everything to Parvati, his wife, in a game of dice. When Parvati, not being able to stay without Lord Shiva, came searching for Lord Shiva, who, taking the disguise of a tiger, attacked Parvati. Terrified, Parvati shouted for help, saying, “Trahi Mam Girisha” which means “O Lord of the Mountains Save Me”. Instantaneously Lord Shiva took off his disguise and the two went back home. Since then the words “Mam girisha” or “Manguesh” became connected with Lord Shiva for which He was started being called “Mangesh” or “Mangirish”. The Manguesh Linga was kept at this holy place for marking the event and was ultimately noticed by a shepherd which was placed on the site of the temple in 1565, the Mangeshi temple in Goa the middle of the 18th century to house the linga.
The style reflected in the architecture of the temple is a blend of Hindu, Muslim and Christian architectural approaches which is brightly lit up in the month of January when the Zatra, accompanied by thousands of devotees, takes place with the deity being taken out on a palanquin procession.
