Goa Tiracol Fort was built by Maharaja Sawanwadi ,on the banks of the river Terekhol. Later it was taken over by the Portuguese . This change of hands occurred in 1746. It was used as a base for freedom fighters during the liberation of Goa in 1961. At present, Goa Tiracol Fort is converted into a Heritage hotel. There is a tranquil chapel, St. Anthony's church, in the fort premises . However this church remains locked throughout the year and opens only during certain occasions.
