Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa or the Reis Magos Church was constructed in 1555 A.D by Franciscan mendicants in Reis Magos, a town along the River Mandovi. These Franciscan Friars were responsible for the local missionary work and so occupied the Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa and established a small institution there. The town of Reis Magos is one of the two popular buildings in Goa, one being this church and the other being Reis Magos Fort. Each year, Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa is the only place where celebrations of the Feast of the Three Wise Men take place with much grandeur.
Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa, devoted to St. Jerome, was constructed just after the structure of the Reis Magos Fort was built. The church as well as the institution soon became a famous place for education. Above the white washed front wall with the pediment just under the cross is a mark of the Portuguese royal coat of arms which is an evidence of this truth. Two former viceroys of Goa were entombed in this Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa. Implicit proofs are also there at Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa, which establish the fact of the church being built on the remains of an ancient Hindu temple. At the beginning of the stairway at the church two low relief figures of lions are carved, which reminds of the ancient architecture of the Vijayanagar temple. The interior portion of the Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa displays the bright Baroque style of architecture, the prime focus of this style being on the multihued wood carvings that depict scenes of the Three Magi Kings or the Three Wise Men carrying gifts for Infant Jesus. These beautiful carvings above the central altar in Church of the Three Magi Kings Goa are really striking. Each year on 6th January, this church vivaciously celebrates the Feast of the Three Wise Men, during which the Biblical story of the three Magi and their trip to infant Jesus is played on stage by the local youths and a procession is also held around the entire place.
