Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church, built during 1517 A.D and 1521 A.D, is a remarkable building displaying the marvel of architectural excellence. Formerly, the church was consecrated to the Holy Ghost and was destroyed later on. The present Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church sharing the complex with Goa Se Cathedral was then constructed on the same location in 1661 preserving only the structure of the entrance of the former church. The Portuguese government stopped the function of the convent in 1835 which was there earlier within the building of Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church. The church was then converted into a museum by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1964, which at present exhibits the ancient remains and paintings of the sculptures of the Goan Hindu temples.
Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church embodies the finest of designs included in the church architecture. Though smaller than Goa Se Cathedral and Goa Basilica of Bom Jesus, the building of Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church is richly painted with ornately carved altars, the splendid architecture being a combination of Tuscan architecture displayed in the exterior and Mosaic Corinthian approach expressed in the interior, reveals restrained satisfaction. A marvelous painting on the ceiling close to the foyer is uniquely Indian in its presence. The interiors are adorned with amazing scenes from the Bible, the wall carvings exhibiting superior and elaborate floral designs.
The statue of St. Michael is placed on the doorway with the wooden figure of St. Francis of Assisi enhancing the beauty of the plinth in one chapel of Goa St. Francis of Assisi Church. A richly carved forte with the synagogue, which acted as the area for exhibiting the holy sacrament is held by the statues of four gospellers in the central altar. Two big figures of Jesus on the Cross and St. Francis Assisi are positioned above the synagogue.
